Report of the dispatch of the short-term experts for the JICA grassroots technical cooperation project: Kindergartens open to the community for improving nutritional status among infants in Kericho District, Republic of Kenya
Reporting day: 2023/ May / 26
Reporter: Yasuko Yokoyama
My name is Yokoyama.
I joined the secretariat of JC-GSHR from March 2023.
From April 30th to May 14th. Associate Professor Tomokawa of the Faculty of Education, Shinshu University, traveled to Republic of Kenya as a short-term expert for a JICA grassroots technical cooperation project.
Dr. Tomokawa’s task was to conduct capacity-building training for counterparts in the Education, Health and Agriculture Departments in Kericho District.
I accompanied her from April 30th to May 5th and observed training on nutrition and hygiene for school lunch cooks and Community Health Volunteers (hereafter written as CHV).
In addition, I visited a kindergarten where JICA is conducting a grassroots project.
According to a Japanese representative of the JICA Grassroots project, there is no opportunity to conduct health check-ups, weight and check the nutritional status of young children in early childhood education in the Kenya. As a result, malnutrition among young children is a problem in Kericho County.
However, Kericho county government officials and kindergarten officials were very interested in capacity development training. Furthermore, various agricultural activities such as poultry farming, dairy farming and growing vegetables are practiced in Kericho County.
It shows the high potential for improving nutritional status in the future.
