A symposium at the IUHPE Conference
Reporting day: 2025/ 07 / 08 / (Year)(Month)(Day)
Reporter: Jun Kobayashi
From May 15, 2025, we held a symposium titled “A call to action from Asia for the
promotion and future co-innovation of planetary health in schools and communities” at
the International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE) in Abu Dhabi.
Planetary health is often discussed as a health policy by the health sector, but its
content is difficult to convey as health education in schools and communities.
In this context, it was proposed that eco-health education can effectively convey the content of planetary health, leading to active discussions.
Dr. Asakura, who has been promoting eco-health by integrating environmental education and health education in Cambodia, and Dr.Tomikawa, who has been doing the same in Laos, introduced their efforts.
Dr. Kigawa explained that Japan's food education is also a practical application of planetary health in schools.
Dr. Kobayashi reported that Small Pacific Island States have been among the first in the world to take action on climate change, and due to their small national scale, policies and school education are integrated in their efforts.
Participants from India and Abu Dhabi raised many questions and opinions, and
discussions continued even after the session ended. We expected for future
collaboration with the Middle East region, with which there has been no prior
collaboration.
